The Chinese Consulate in Lagos recently marked the 2025 Chinese New Year and Spring Festival with a vibrant reception and gala, attended by key figures from both the Chinese and Nigerian communities.

Yan Yuqing, China’s Consul-General in Lagos, during her speech, described the festival as not only a Chinese tradition but also one that fosters mutual understanding and strengthens the bond between China and Nigeria.

She also emphasized the Spring Festival’s growing global significance, noting its recognition by the UN and UNESCO as an important cultural celebration.

Reflecting on the past year, Yuqing celebrated the fruitful results of China-Nigeria cooperation in areas such as trade, infrastructure, and technology. She pointed to key projects like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic development, with Chinese companies leading major infrastructure projects.

Yuqing also shared the successful launch of the “Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light” charity project, which helped over 300 cataract sufferers regain their sight.

She also announced the launch of the “Together Fight Against Hunger” project in 2025, aimed at alleviating hunger among Nigeria’s low-income communities.

She concluded by reiterating China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria through the BRI and other initiatives, ensuring a brighter future for both nations.

The event, themed “One World, One Spring, Huaxing Shines,” was a vibrant celebration of cultural exchange, featuring a colourful display of traditional dance, music, and cuisines. This showcase highlighted the rich cultural heritage of both China and Nigeria, fostering deeper connections between the two nations and reaffirming the strong bond of friendship and cooperation.
