Sports are an essential tool for Nigerians’ social integration and unity, according to the federal government.

This was said yesterday during the First National Council on Sports technical meeting in Enugu by Mrs. Atinuke Watti, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development.

“Sports for National Unity and Socio-Economic Development” is the conference’s theme.

She claimed that because sports bring people together through competition, accomplishments, and a sense of shared pride, they transcend barriers related to language, ethnicity, and religion.

“Sports unite us in every part of our nation, from the cities to the towns and villages, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose,” the speaker stated.

According to Watti, sports offer a forum for individuals to embrace variety and find strength in their shared humanity.

Sports teach us the virtues of endurance, respect, and teamwork.

She remarked, “These are the values that build resilient nations and strong communities.”

Mr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the deputy governor of Enugu State, opened the conference by stating that sports are a catalyst for youth empowerment, social cohesion, and economic development.

Lloyd Ekweremmadu, the state’s commissioner for youths and sports, was in his place.

After the technical session, Ossai stated that the conference would establish the framework for policies that will change the game and creative programmes that will benefit young people.

Let’s use our combined knowledge to tackle the issues affecting the sports industry and look for creative solutions that will help us reach new heights.

“Your utmost attention and concerted efforts are required in key areas such as infrastructure development, athletes welfare, funding mechanism, coaching standards, and grassroots sports programmes,” stated Ossai.
