The Lagos State Government is taking significant steps to promote tourism in Ikorodu by integrating three of its heritage trails into UNESCO’s list of recognized heritage sites. This move is expected to boost tourism in the area, leveraging its rich cultural heritage and traditional festivals ¹.
To achieve this, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, met with key stakeholders, including the six major town Obas of the Ikorodu kingdom and the Local Government Chairman of Ikorodu West, Honourable Wasiu Adeshina. Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasized the benefits of this integration, highlighting the potential for increased tourism and the documentation of Ikorodu’s heritage sites and festivals.
The Yoruba Heritage week, scheduled for November, will be a significant celebration of Yoruba culture, tradition, and heritage, further solidifying Ikorodu’s position as a cultural hub.
UNESCO’s recognition process involves submitting tentative lists of potential heritage sites, which are then evaluated for their cultural and historical significance ². If successful, Ikorodu’s heritage trails will join the ranks of esteemed global cultural landmarks.
This initiative promises to not only promote tourism but also preserve Ikorodu’s rich cultural legacy for future generations.
