Africa’s first feature film centered on artificial intelligence, is set to premiere in Lagos this Easter before a wider international release.

The film, which explores how young Africans are using AI to tackle real-world challenges, has already generated global interest. It was first introduced at the 2024 Global AI Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, followed by a private stakeholders’ screening at Kenya Innovation Week and an exclusive viewing at the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Lagos.

Scheduled for a nationwide cinema release on April 18, Makemation will later expand to other African countries, the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East in May 2025.

The production brings together a mix of Nollywood stars, tech industry experts, policymakers, and social media influencers. Directed by Michael ‘Ama Psalmist’ Akinrogunde, the film blends elements of drama, comedy, and technology, offering an unconventional take on AI’s role in everyday life.

Beyond entertainment, Makemation touches on broader social themes, including STEM education, financial literacy, and gender equality. The film’s producer, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, emphasized its relevance in sparking discussions on Africa’s place in the global digital economy.

“This film is not just about AI; it’s about the future of young Africans in technology,” Akerele-Ogunsiji said. “It’s a conversation starter on how we can shape the digital revolution to benefit our society.”

Shot across multiple locations, including rural communities and high-end urban districts, Makemation incorporates diverse perspectives on AI’s impact. The project was produced by Rise Interactive Studios and Rise Networks, organizations focused on Africa’s technological advancement.

The film will be distributed by Nile Entertainment, with expectations of strong reception both locally and internationally.
