22-year old Nigerian, Zuriel Oduwole, a passionate advocate for peace, education, and gender equality, has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

A statement released on Sunday highlighted Oduwole’s extensive work in global diplomacy, where she has influenced discussions on education and peace, championed opportunities for underserved communities, and driven meaningful social change.

Born in Los Angeles to Nigerian grandparents, Oduwole has met with multiple world leaders, including presidents and prime ministers, to address policy and development issues. Her efforts have been particularly focused on improving access to education for marginalized groups and promoting peaceful conflict resolution.

Notably, at just 13 years old, she played a mediating role in a territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela, engaging with then-President David Granger at the United Nations to advocate for diplomatic dialogue. In 2020, she also consulted with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on strategies for maintaining global peace amid the Arab blockade of Qatar, which was resolved the following year.

The nomination recognizes her unwavering commitment to these causes and highlights Nigeria’s growing presence in global advocacy. From a young age, Oduwole has believed in the transformative power of education. Her journey began at nine when she witnessed young girls in Accra working as street vendors instead of attending school. This experience led her to use documentary filmmaking as a tool to raise awareness about the barriers to education.

Reacting to her nomination, Oduwole, who is also a filmmaker, emphasized the need for greater investment in young voices. “I have never sought recognition, only to speak up where it’s needed. This honor reflects the urgent need to invest in young voices as agents of change,” she stated.

Through her initiative, Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand, she continues to empower young people, particularly girls, by encouraging them to advocate for their rights and future opportunities. By combining storytelling with diplomacy, she has influenced policies and contributed to a more inclusive and equitable world.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is expected to announce the 2025 laureate later this year. Regardless of the final decision, Oduwole’s nomination underscores the increasing impact of youth-led advocacy in shaping global policy and advancing sustainable peace efforts.

The Nobel Peace Prize remains one of the world’s most esteemed honors, recognizing individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to peace and human rights.
