The Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to property owners in Shoreline Estate, Onikoyi Estate, Park View, and Banana Island in the Ikoyi area. They are instructed to dismantle fences encroaching on drainage channels.

During a weekend inspection, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, highlighted that many buildings in the area did not adhere to the standard 3-meter distance from the drainage channel. However, he announced the government’s decision to allow a reduced margin of 2.5 meters, with a warning that any structure falling short would face removal.

Wahab urged owners to voluntarily remove encroaching fences before the ultimatum expires. He cautioned that if the government needed to use taxpayers’ funds for enforcement, property owners would be surcharged for the expenses. The commissioner explained that after investigation, the government would magnanimously adopt a 2.5-meter setback instead of the required 3 meters for a balanced situation. Property owners and residents along the specified collector drain have seven days to adjust their fences, and enforcement will commence immediately after the notice period.
