The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged media cooperation in the fight against Nigeria’s silent epidemic.
During his presentation at the Association of Nigeria Health Journalists (ANHEJ) 7th Annual Conference in Nasarawa State, with the theme “Health Security: Nigeria’s Efforts to Achieve Universal Health Coverage,” Dr. Chavan Laxmikant, the UCN Cluster Lead/AMR Expert from WHO, made the call.
Dr. Laxmikant emphasised how important it is for media experts to spread the word about the silent epidemic.
Stressing the importance of AMR on a global scale, he called on journalists to work together to promote responsible reporting, spread accurate information, and influence public opinion.
The workshop stressed the urgency of taking immediate action by outlining the problems caused by AMR, such as rising healthcare costs and the possibility of 10 million deaths annually by 2050.
In order to create an informed public, it was emphasised that media cooperation is essential to the fight against AMR. More frequent coverage, fact-checking, and responsible reporting were encouraged.
