In order to promote healthy living, the Lagos State Government, acting through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, has mandated that everyone in the state keep the environment clean both before and after the holiday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, stated that it was crucial to remind Lagosians to cherish the environment above all else during their celebrations.

As he congratulated the locals on another successful holiday season, Wahab reminded everyone to protect the environment and make sure that all of the trash that was produced over the course of the Christmas and New Year’s festivities was disposed of appropriately.

“I urge all residents to strive towards maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable environment because flooding will come back to haunt you if you continue to desecrate the environment through improper waste disposal,” he said.

He emphasised that in order to prevent the spread of illness, all waste produced during the holiday season needs to be disposed of appropriately by bagging it and placing it in the designated locations for LAWMA personnel to pick up.

Residents were reassured by him that the Ministry of Environment and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) would continue to work together to remove waste heaps from Lagos due to the anticipated increase in waste generation this season.

Wahab went on to say that the government is committed to taking the initiative to educate Lagosians about the value of a sustainable environment and to discourage the illegal disposal of waste.

He stated that Lagosians are urged to refrain from actions that might harm the environment because the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is leading the charge in the fight for healthy people and a cleaner environment.

He reaffirmed that the state’s laws prohibiting street vendors were still in effect and emphasised that vendors should refrain from setting up shop on state highways, road medians, setbacks, and lay-bys, among other locations.

After that, he wished a prosperous New Year’s Eve and an eco-friendly Christmas to every resident.
