The planned strike by the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN), which was scheduled to start on Thursday, has been postponed.

The union said that agreements made with the subcontractors it had problems with were the reason for the suspension in a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its general secretary, Okonu Abdullahi.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the union declared on April 2 that it would go on an indefinite strike in response to purported unresolved disputes with subcontractors connected to Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.

Reime Group, Allstream Energy Solutions Ltd., Uppercrest Ltd., Tyllium Nigeria Ltd., and Specific Tools and Techniques Ltd. were among the subcontractors.

In order to address the concerns of its members, PTECSSAN vowed to take industrial action against the signatory subcontractors on April 4, 2024, according to the union.

“This prompted a conference in the union secretariat, where agreements were made, among them the recognition by businesses of the employees’ fundamental right to freely associate with the union.

That the businesses will establish health facilities in compliance with the National Health Insurance Scheme, providing coverage for up to four dependents, spouses, and employees.

According to NAN, the union is demanding that its members’ dues be paid on time, that their basic right to organize be recognized immediately, and that the union be recognized as the representative in negotiations for their welfare.

In addition, PTECSSAN demanded that union members working on Huawei projects have regular jobs, that pension and health insurance laws be followed, and that collective bargaining agreement negotiations be started.

Additionally, the union claimed that despite the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s attempts to resolve the issues through conciliatory discussions, the corporations have not cooperated in a constructive manner, leaving them with no choice but to take industrial action (NAN).
