In a statement posted on its official website on Monday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) declared George’s appointment.
A portion of the announcement says, “On Monday, the Board of Nigeria Football Federation approved the nomination of its Technical and Development Committee to name former star winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.”
George took over as temporary head coach of the senior national team in March after 20 months as Jose Peseiro’s assistant.
The Super Eagles’ two friendlies against Ghana and Mali in Morocco were managed by the Enyimba coach.
George’s team achieved a historic triumph in the opening game over Ghana, defeating the Black Stars 2-1 and ending an 18-year losing run to the fierce rival.
But the team suffered a defeat, falling behind 0–2 in the next match against Mali.
One of Nigeria’s most well-known players from the country’s “Golden Generation,” George famously won the Africa Cup of Nations championship in 1994 and played for his country in the FIFA World Cup finals, when they finished as the second-most entertaining team in their first-ever trip.
With 62 caps for Nigeria, George’s remarkable career has taken him through several competitions, such as the FIFA World Cup and the AFCON, where he won gold, silver, and bronze in different editions between 1992 and 2002.
