A new inquiry into the explosion that happened in a farmland in the Ikeja cantonment, Lagos, mammy market area, has been launched by the Nigerian Army.
On Monday night, there was an explosion in a farm belonging to the Nigerian Army’s 9 Brigade in the Ikeja neighborhood of Lagos.
The Nigerian Army transported some explosive munitions from the Ikeja cantonment to Ajilete in Ogun State during “Exercise Clean Sweep,” according to a Daily Trust story dated October 2023. This was 21 years after an explosion struck the cantonment, killing 1,100 people and uprooting over 20,000 others.
Even though there were no casualties reported from Monday’s blast, many who live close to the cantonment were alarmed.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, verified the explosion in a Monday night statement.
According to Nwachukwu, it is believed that the farmer who farmed the area set fire to trash and other combustible debris, setting off the fire.
Thankfully, there were no reported casualties from the incident. However, given that the Cantonment was recently cleared and confirmed free of unexploded ordnances, we recognize that there could be worries among the general public as a result of the historical antecedent of explosion within the Cantonment.”
In order to fully investigate the cause of the explosion, the NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has cordoned off the farming area. As a result, the NA wants to reassure the public that everything is under control. We reassure the local population that they are safe and ask them not to worry,” the message said.
