Following Jose Peseiro’s departure, Augustine Owen Eguavoen, the technical director of the Super Eagles, has assumed the coaching position for the Nigerian football team, according to Soccernet.ng.

Peseiro, 63, was appointed to lead the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s elimination from the AFCON 2021 competition in Cameroon. He began his position in May 2022.

Sebastien Haller drove the final nail in the coffin of the worn-out Super Eagles, and although the Portuguese guided Nigeria to the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, his squad ultimately failed to win.

In spite of receiving a pay decrease, the former Porto manager left the team in February after his contract expired and he stopped playing for the Super Eagles.

In the interim, while a long-term solution is being worked out, reports have it that Augustine Eguavoen, the team’s technical director, will lead the three-time AFCON winners.

Following the departure of the previous coach, Gernot Rohr, the former right wing-back for the Super Eagles led the Nigerian team in the AFCON 2021 competition in Cameroon.

The 58-year-old continued to lead the team after Tunisia eliminated Nigeria from the AFCON competition in Cameroon during the round of sixteen.

When the team won a silver medal in the AFCON 2023 competition in Ivory Coast, Eguavoen served as its technical director.
