The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. James Odedeji, has called on Christians to avoid all forms of evil and ensure that sin does not dim the light of God in their lives.
Speaking during an online broadcast on Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, the bishop emphasized the importance of believers living as shining examples of Christ. He referenced the diocese’s theme for the year, “Be a Beacon of Light,” stressing that Jesus has called His followers to stand out through their good works.
“You are the light of the world. Don’t hide your light. Don’t hide your influence. Don’t stay silent when you should speak up. Don’t follow the crowd to do evil. Don’t let sin dim your light so that all may be well with you,” he urged.
Highlighting the presence of darkness in the world, Bishop Odedeji quoted John 8:12, where Jesus declared that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. He further referenced Matthew 5:14, reinforcing that the role of Christians as lights in the world is non-negotiable.
“This is not up for debate. This is the purpose of our salvation. God saved us so we can make a difference wherever we are,” he stated.
The bishop encouraged believers to use their God-given light to uplift others and fulfill their divine purpose. He explained that this light is meant to dispel darkness, reveal God’s plans, and positively impact communities.
“The light in you is meant to drive away darkness and reveal God’s plan for others. It is meant to uplift the community and accomplish the mission God has given you,” he added.
He also reminded Christians of Jesus’ command to bear lasting fruit, emphasizing that their purpose is not to conform but to stand out as reflections of God’s glory.
“Wherever we are, we are not there to blend in or seek attention. We are called to be beacons of light so that through us, others may come to know their redemption.”
He concluded by assuring that when believers allow their light to shine, they glorify God and fulfill His purpose for their lives.
“When your light shines, people around you will see God’s glory, and He will be proud of you. They will give glory to your Father in heaven. That is true fruitfulness. That is when you can confidently say, ‘Lord, I have done what You asked me to do,’” he said.
