Truck drivers in the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s (LAWMA) fleet have been read the riot book by Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, managing director and chief executive officer, who has declared that the organization will not tolerate careless driving.
This was said by Gbadegesin at the agency’s Ijora-Olopa offices, where he issued several warnings against breaking any laws pertaining to safe driving and road traffic, including not using seat belts, driving while intoxicated, speeding, and acting carelessly on public roads.
He warned them that failure to adhere to safe driving regulations could result in harsh consequences, such as termination.
He lists the following other infractions: overloading, failing to carry safety gear, having a driver’s license that isn’t valid, trash handlers clinging to moving trucks, and other careless behaviors that can result in an accident.
He emphasized that severe consequences will now be implemented, ranging from complete termination to prosecution, job suspension, loss of monthly income and benefits, and failure to pay medical expenses if injured in an accident, contingent on the seriousness of the transgression.
“From now on, careless driving practices and violations of safe driving guidelines will be met with severe consequences, which may include termination, among other dire consequences,” he declared. Throughout daily operations, the safety of our drivers, homeowners, and other road users always comes first. We are making every effort to guarantee that our truck drivers carry out their responsibilities in a way that won’t jeopardize the lives of residents of the state.
He said that all of LAWMA’s trash evacuation trucks will now publicly display phone numbers so that locals may report incidents of risky behavior or reckless driving on the highways in a timely manner.
Gbadegesin emphasized the need of community involvement in upholding road safety standards and added that by giving locals the authority to report problems, everyone’s efforts may encourage safer driving behaviors.
He gave the people his word that all reports would be looked into carefully and that any truck drivers who made mistakes would be dealt with appropriately.
The head of LAWMA reiterated the organization’s dedication to maintaining the greatest levels of professionalism in waste management operations and promised that the Authority will keep working to make sure that everyone in Lagos lives in a cleaner and healthier environment.
He urged locals to report issues with trash management or driver breaches of the law by calling the toll-free numbers provided by LAWMA or the phone numbers posted on waste evacuation vehicles.
