The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) have honed their strategic cooperation efforts to secure the approval process for building construction permits and property development board signage permits.

This initiative, which is scheduled to start on January 1st, 2024, is a collaborative effort to improve Lagos State’s overall development landscape and reduce corrupt practices in the built environment.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our commitment to creating a more efficient and developer-friendly regulatory environment,” stated Prince Fatiu Akiolu, Managing Director of LASAA, during a meeting of both Agencies in Ikeja. Our goal in collaborating with LASBCA is to guarantee that all development signboards meet the highest international standards and improve the environment.

“The procedure is easy to follow. The development board fee for their developments must be paid when applying for any building construction to LASBCA. In addition, he stated, “LASAA will provide an information board to be attached to each site and a permit letter of approval for the application.”

According to Mr. Akiolu, the merging of LASAA and LASBCA is expected to standardise the permit procedure for development boards and guarantee a smooth and well-coordinated method of gaining approval for building construction and signage permits. In order to prevent using unauthorised and unapproved banners as property signage on their construction sites, he called on estate managers and property developers.

The initiative, according to Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, General Manager of LASBCA, is to stop sharp practices in the built industry as well as the process of financially surcharging the State Government. He claimed that the LASAA-granted development board permit will readily reveal the specifics of the work being done and the personnel assigned at the construction site.

“The partnership with LASAA demonstrates our shared commitment to the sustainable development of Lagos State,” he said. In addition to helping developers, streamlining the approval process for building construction and signage permits also improves the harmony and aesthetics of the urban environment.

“With effect from January 1, 2024, a development board permit from LASAA is required for all new and existing projects in addition to other approvals before a letter of authorization to start construction is issued. He further stated, “Work sites not covered by this signage permit will be sealed up.”

According to the general manager, combining building permits and billboards will significantly regulate the construction sector by thwarting illegal activity and lessening the risk of building collapses in the state. He went on to say that the unified permit is a comprehensive programme that applies to both residential and commercial structures.

The Development Board is a standard requirement for building approval that conveys important information about a development, including key features that give valuable details to onlookers and project details, contactors and engineering information.

Through the partnership, private property developers will be able to submit applications for development signage permits in addition to building permits at the same time thanks to a streamlined and uniform application process.

By virtue of this initiative, property developers are required to attain comprehensive compliance by securing building construction approval and signage permits, which can be obtained in as little as 48 hours, before mobilising to the site to start construction in accordance with the legal requirements established by LASAA and LASBCA.

The regulatory body in charge of managing, controlling, and regulating outdoor advertising and signage displays in Lagos State is the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), while the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is in charge of creating and enforcing building control laws within the State.
