Residents of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area have been urged by the Federal and Lagos State Governments to support the reconstruction of Eleko Road in order to further the development of the area.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Alausa on Tuesday, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, stated that the project is significant given the rapid rate of development in the Ibeju-Lekki corridor.

If the project is completed successfully, a more functional, orderly, and organised environment will be achieved, which will raise the standard of living in the area, according to him.

He said there was a plan in place to compensate the impacted property and urged the locals to demonstrate understanding of the difficulties the project would present, such as the need to remove encroaching structures on the right of way.

The authorised right of way for the road, which runs from the Dangote Fertiliser Plant to Eleko Junction, is 46 metres on either side, according to Engr. Olukorede Keisha, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos State. He also stated that the road was built with rail lines and to handle the anticipated traffic in the area.

And according to Engineer Oluwole Sotire, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, he said the Lands Bureau will start enumerating affected owners for compensation purposes as soon as the marking of the affected structures within the approved right of way is completed.

In addition to voicing concerns regarding the scope of the right of way and the procedures for paying compensation, stakeholders from the Lekki Local Council Development Area and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government acknowledged the significant benefits that would result from the reconstruction of the road.

Deputy Governor of Ogun State Bode Oyedele’s spouse, former commissioner for local government Muslim Folami, honourable member of the Lagos State House of Assembly for Ibeju-Lekki Constituency II Hon. Oladele Ajayi, and chairman of the Ibeju-Lekki local government Engr. Sesan Olowa were the main stakeholders.

The others are Chief Adesegun Agbaje of Opemoluwa of Ibeju-Lekki Kingdom; Oba Babatunde Balogun of Solu Alade; Oba Adeleke Akibu Ismaila of Lepia; and Onisolu of Debojo, Oba Babatunde Balogun.
