The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish a dedicated security unit, dubbed “Power Rangers,” to safeguard the nation’s electricity infrastructure.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this initiative during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

“We have now decided, in collaboration with the Minister of Power, to introduce what we call the Power Rangers,” he stated.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the new security unit will consist of personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and will be specifically tasked with preventing vandalism of power installations across the country.

With increasing cases of power outages linked to infrastructure sabotage, the minister emphasized the need for a sector-specific security strategy.

“So you have to analyse every sector, the power sector, the water sector, the education sector, the health sector; and be able to create arms of Civil Defence under the same umbrella,” he stated.

He added that the government is now focusing on tailoring security solutions for different sectors, including power, water, education, and healthcare.

The minister noted that the success of Mines Marshals who are a specialized security unit introduced in March 2024 to tackle challenges in the mining sector inspired the creation of the Power Rangers.

While the initiative has been confirmed, no official launch date has been set.

“We are already in the process of onboarding those officers; we have to profile them, look at their capacity, look at their competence, look at their area of specialisation, look at a lot of considerations, even physical strength.” Tunji-Ojo revealed.

The unit will be stationed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure comprehensive protection of power infrastructure and installations.
