Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, recently reflected on how her perspective on her upbringing has evolved over the years.
The disc jockey and daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola admitted that she did not always recognize how privileged her life was.
As a child, she never had to worry about basic necessities, and her lifestyle felt completely normal. However, as she grew older, she began to realize that what she once took for granted was something many people could only dream of.
Sharing her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “Growing up, I didn’t fully realize just how privileged I was. I never had to worry about anything. Thank God I see it now. What felt normal to me is something someone else is praying for. Gratitude changes everything.”
Her statement sparked discussions online, with many people sharing their views. Some commended her for acknowledging her privilege, while others highlighted the stark contrast between her experience and the struggles faced by the average person.
DJ Cuppy’s realization mirrors that of another Nigerian celebrity, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido. Unlike Cuppy, who came to this understanding later in life, Davido discovered his family’s wealth at the age of 13.
Speaking on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, he recalled how he grew up unaware of his billionaire father’s status due to his father’s disciplined and modest lifestyle.
“Despite all the money, my dad was very disciplined. I didn’t know we were rich until I was 13. He was a billionaire driving a Honda Accord. I only realized the extent of our wealth when our house got destroyed in an explosion. My mom said we had to move, and I was shocked when we arrived at a massive house my dad had been building. That was the moment it dawned on me that my father was wealthy.”
