The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has affirmed that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun will remain in office until 2027, in line with legal provisions.

Fagbemi, in a statement on Thursday, said the extension is backed by the 2024 amendment to the Police Act, which grants the IGP a fixed four-year tenure, regardless of retirement age.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continued stay in office is in line with the provisions of the Police Act amended in 2024, which allows the occupant of the office to enjoy a term of four years effective from the date of his appointment as IGP, in this case, October 31, 2023,” Fagbemi stated.

He emphasized that the clarification was necessary to guide public understanding, reaffirming the legality of the IGP’s extended tenure.
