The promotion of El-Kanemi Warriors to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has been confirmed. The football team from Maiduguri, which defeated Sokoto 4-1 on Wednesday to secure promotion to the NPFL for the upcoming football season, placed second with six points in the Northern Conference of the just concluded Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoff in Enugu. Following a 2-1 victory over Sporting Supreme in their most recent group match, Nasarawa United leads the Northern Conference with nine points from three games.
In addition to the two teams who were demoted to the NNL the previous season, Ikorodu City and Beyond Limits FC have also been promoted to the NPFL. Ikorodu City placed second in the Southern Conference with five points, trailing only Beyond Limits with seven points, and earned promotion to the top level football league for the first time in the team’s existence.
In the short time since the club’s founding—just two years ago—their triumphant campaign represents a critical turning point.
