The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to implement the new national minimum wage and other entitlements for judicial workers or face an indefinite strike.
This ultimatum was issued in a communiqué released on Wednesday following an emergency meeting at the JUSUN Secretariat in Abuja. According to the statement, the deadline takes effect from Thursday, February 13, 2025, and expires on February 19, 2025.
JUSUN warned that if their demands are not met within the stipulated time, its members will embark on an indefinite strike starting February 20, 2025. The union is demanding the full implementation of the N77,000 national minimum wage and other benefits, which have yet to be applied to judicial workers, despite other public sector employees receiving the new wage.
Previously, JUSUN had given the government a 21-day ultimatum to address these concerns, but no action was taken.
The communiqué stated, “The meeting primarily focused on the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum given to all Heads of Federal Courts, FCT Courts, and Judicial Bodies.
“After thorough deliberations, the following resolutions were reached: An additional seven-day notice is hereby issued for the full implementation of the minimum wage in accordance with relevant industrial guidelines and the urgent intervention of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun.
“The seven-day notice begins on Thursday, February 13, 2025, and ends on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
“If our demands are not met within this period, the union cannot guarantee industrial harmony. Consequently, an indefinite strike will commence from Thursday, February 20, 2025.”
JUSUN has urged the Federal Government to act promptly to avoid disruptions in judicial operations across the country.
