The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Censorship Board Amendment Bill 2025, granting the board enhanced regulatory authority over entertainment and media content in the state.
The bill was approved on Tuesday following its consideration by the Committee of the Whole House and a third reading by the Clerk, Bashir Diso, during Monday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Ismail Falgore.
Addressing journalists after the session, Lawan Husseini, the lawmaker representing Dala Constituency, explained that the amendment empowers the board to regulate event centre registrations and ensure entertainment activities align with Islamic principles.
“The board will now oversee the registration of event centres and enforce strict compliance with Islamic values in entertainment-related activities,” Husseini stated.
He further revealed that the board’s name had been changed from State Censorship Board to Kano State Censorship Board, emphasizing its jurisdictional scope.
Additionally, the new law mandates that all films, series, and serials must receive approval from the board before being aired. It also prohibits the indiscriminate shooting of films within the state without prior authorization.
