The Lagos State government is planning to update the curriculum in schools to reflect new trends. This will be done through the ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in collaboration with the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
This was announced at the “2024 Network of Education Service Centre (NESC) Convocation,” a three-day conference held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja.
The states of Borno, Yobe, Plateau, Jigawa, Ondo, Ekiti, and FCT were among those that took part in the convocation.
“Repositioning Education Innovation and Service Centres to address Trends and on Curriculum Reform for Economic Growth in Nigeria” is the theme of this year’s convocation.
Speaking on behalf of Jamiu Tolani Ali-Balogun, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, Permanent Secretary, urged attendees to use the conference to reposition the education system.
“As we come together here today, our country faces challenges regarding self-help,” he stated. It needs to change to fit the needs of the 21st-century economy. In order to handle the urgent problems, the service centre is indispensable.
He states that among the topics to be looked at are curriculum improvements, emphasising that they need to be critical thinking-based and appropriate for the twenty-first century.
He continued by saying that technology knowledge is essential to closing the digital divide.
The THEMES+ agenda on education and technology is combined because, in Lagos State, we take technology in the classroom seriously. It is necessary to improve teacher development and training.
In addition to stating that cooperation and partnership must work together by relocating the service centres in order to put students on the path of success to create a brighter future, he underlined that innovation and entrepreneurship must be promoted to provide answers for society.
The Commissioner argued, “We can make the difference and create a better future for our youth.”
Prof. Ismail Jinadu, Executive Secretary of NERDC, expressed his happiness with Lagos State Government’s readiness to host the 2024 edition after a protracted absence.
