The Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, Ikeja, as part of its broader initiative to enhance the creative and entertainment landscape in the state.

The redevelopment effort follows the destruction of the facility during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests. Determined to restore the theatre’s legacy, the state government has launched a comprehensive plan to transform it into a world-class cultural and artistic hub.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the significance of the project, emphasizing its role in providing a modern, dynamic space for artistic performances, cultural exhibitions, and creative engagements.

“The government is committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a hub for talent development and entertainment in Lagos,” she stated.

She also stressed the importance of community ownership in safeguarding public infrastructure.

“When public assets meant to serve the people are destroyed, it is often due to a lack of awareness and responsibility.”

The reconstruction project has been awarded to Mrs. Ayo Jaiyesimi, CEO of Thespian Family Theatre and Productions, who will oversee its transformation.

Benson-Awoyinka assured that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture would collaborate closely with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other key stakeholders to ensure the seamless execution of the project.

She also commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his dedication to the creative sector and his unwavering support in making the project a reality.
