Lagos House of Rep Stand Firm on Meranda as Assembly e Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed Mojisola Meranda as its Speaker, following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025.
In response to Obasa’s recent insistence that he remains the Speaker, the Assembly clarified in a statement signed by Ogundipe Olukayode that over two-thirds of its members are united in their support for Meranda.
The statement emphasized that the decision to remove Obasa and elect Meranda was made democratically and in line with the Assembly’s rules. “The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed. The claims by the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obasa, are both unnecessary and unparliamentary,” Olukayode stated.
He further explained that Obasa was initially elected as Speaker of the 10th Assembly but was later removed through a majority decision of the lawmakers.
The Assembly appealed to Obasa to accept the decision peacefully and join other members in fostering good governance and harmony between the legislative and executive arms of government.
The inaugural plenary under Speaker Meranda’s leadership was held on January 17, 2025, marking a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly.
