The Lagos International Theatre Festival (LITF) is set to debut in November 2024, bringing together an extraordinary assembly of creative talents from around the world.

Organised by the renowned Bolanle Austen-Peters in partnership with the Lagos State government, this inaugural edition aims to foster a thriving community of thespians, promote excellence, and drive sustainability in the creative industry.

Bolanle Austen-Peters, a celebrated theatre director, producer, and award-winning filmmaker, leads the festival with support from prominent sponsors including First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Dorman Long Engineering, Amstel Malta, and the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts.

Speaking about the festival, Austen-Peters said, “The creative industry is the lifeblood of every thriving nation, and Nigeria is richly endowed with immense talent and creativity. This is the one resource that is limitless, a gift from God. We must create platforms where our creatives can tell their stories, explore their craft, and share our values with the world. That’s why we are launching the Lagos International Theatre Festival.”

The festival will run from November 15 to 17, 2024, across four iconic Lagos venues: The National Theatre, Terra Kulture, Muson Centre, and John Randle Centre. These locations will offer attendees a variety of performances, including musicals, skits, and repertory theatre, showcasing the richness of African culture and storytelling.

The Lagos State Government, a lead sponsor of LITF, is proud to support arts and culture within its borders. Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, remarked, “Today, we celebrate the vibrant cultural heritage and artistic spirit that make Lagos truly unique. This festival not only highlights the incredible talents of our local performers, directors, and playwrights but also brings communities together in a shared experience of storytelling. Theatre has the power to inspire, challenge, and connect us, reminding us of our shared humanity.”

As the lead bank sponsor, First Bank, through its First@Arts Initiative, reinforces its commitment to youth development and the arts. Folake Ani-Mumuney, Group Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications at First Bank, shared, “We are thrilled to partner on the Lagos International Theatre Festival. This collaboration allows us to support nation-building while empowering Nigeria’s creative industry. Platforms like LITF enable the next generation of creative talent to flourish.”

The Lagos International Theatre Festival will be a celebration of creativity and diversity, featuring performances by local and international artists. Its advisory and governing boards include notable figures such as Joke Silva, Femi Elufowoju Jr., Chioma Ude, Jahman Anikulapo, Israel Eboh, Samuel Perry, Kehinde Bankole, Osas Ighodaro, John Momoh, Karl Toriola, Yemi Idowu, Ron Kunene, Ladi Chinede, Donald Duke, and Yewande Zaccheus. Their involvement ensures a world-class event that will captivate audiences and deepen appreciation for the arts.

Beyond the performances, the festival will offer workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions led by industry professionals, providing invaluable learning opportunities for aspiring artists. Attendees can also explore a bustling marketplace featuring theatre-related merchandise.

LITF 2024 promises to be an unforgettable experience for theatre enthusiasts, performers, and culture lovers alike.
