The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), has launched a three-day training program aimed at updating the National Social Register (NSR) using the National Identification Number (NIN) to enhance the efficiency of social intervention programs.
The training, themed “Integration of the NIN with the NSR Update,” took place over the weekend at the Dover Hotel, Ikeja.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, emphasized the significance of the updated register in assigning unique identities to beneficiaries.
This, she noted, would promote social inclusion and ensure transparency in the distribution of social interventions.
According to Mrs. Ojo, “The primary objectives of this training include but are not limited to certifying the trainees who are the front-end enrollment partners with NIMC in facilitating NIN enrollment and verification; aligning with the federal government’s goal of linking intervention beneficiaries to their unique identities, reducing double dipping, and promoting transparency. It also aims to promote digitalization and integration through enhanced identity management.”
She further highlighted that, as of February 2025, the Lagos State Single Social Register (LASSR) contains data on 688,759 poor and vulnerable households and 2,681,507 individuals.
Mrs. Ojo reiterated that Lagos, as a key sub-national entity, is strategically positioned to drive this initiative, which will enhance the credibility of the register, improve transparency and accountability, facilitate beneficiary access to social interventions, and strengthen tracking mechanisms for both vulnerable households and government social protection expenditures.
