The Lagos State Government has begun discussions on the enforcement of a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs), with full implementation expected soon.

During a meeting with the Food and Beverages Recycling Alliance (FBRA) at Alausa on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated the government’s commitment to phasing out SUPs as part of its environmental sustainability efforts.

He referenced the successful enforcement of the styrofoam ban last year, noting that the state remains strategic and intentional in its approach.

“We are now in February, and we are engaging key stakeholders. Our agreement is to continue with extensive advocacy and discussions with the association before full enforcement begins,” Wahab said.

He acknowledged that the ban would inevitably affect FBRA members, including business owners, manufacturers, and suppliers. However, he assured that further engagements would take place before the end of the month to refine the enforcement strategy.

Unlike styrofoam, Wahab explained, the ban on SUPs presents more complexities, requiring careful planning to avoid disruptions.

“There is a shared commitment to ensuring this ban is executed effectively. Beyond enforcement, we must also consider extended producer responsibilities, funding, and management strategies,” he added.

Addressing concerns, the commissioner clarified that the government is not banning sachet water but only single-use plastics below 40 microns.
