The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has refuted claims that she has resigned from her position.
Her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, dismissed the speculation on Wednesday, labeling it as misinformation.
“I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where this is coming from,” Ajiboye stated. He attributed the rumors to supporters of the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, alleging that they were spreading fake news to mislead the public and undermine the new leadership.
Ajiboye further explained that the speculation was fueled by a forged resignation letter, which began circulating online on Monday through “paid bloggers.” He urged the public to disregard the reports, calling them baseless and lacking any credibility.
The clarification follows widespread rumors that Meranda had stepped down, with a document dated February 17, 2025, claiming to be her resignation letter making rounds on social media. However, closer examination of the document revealed that it lacked a signature.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the impeachment of former Speaker Obasa by a majority of lawmakers. In response to his removal, Obasa has insisted that he remains the rightful Speaker, claiming that the process leading to his impeachment was flawed.
Speaking to his supporters at his official residence in GRA, Ikeja, Obasa argued that Meranda’s election as Speaker was unlawful and declared his impeachment “null and void.” He further alleged that a fake mace was used in the process and accused security forces of intimidating his allies at the assembly on the day of his removal.
Obasa also claimed that police officers stormed his residence, restricting his family’s movement. He vowed to challenge his impeachment in court and insisted that he would resume office.
Meanwhile, members of the House have urged Lagos residents to ignore Obasa’s claims, warning him against escalating tensions in the state’s political landscape.
