The Lagos State Government has cautioned against unauthorised shoreline extensions and illegal developments on Banana Island, emphasizing strict enforcement of building regulations.

During a stakeholders’ meeting at the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) headquarters, officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the estate’s structural integrity.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Babatunde Abiodun, stressed that all property owners on Banana Island must obtain valid building approvals. He noted a rise in illegal extensions and warned that the government would take decisive action against violators.

Property owners along the shoreline were given a two-week deadline to submit relevant documents for verification.

Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Nurudeen Sodeinde, condemned instances where government officials faced obstruction during monitoring exercises, stating that such actions would not be tolerated.

“It is unacceptable to prevent officials from carrying out their duties. Development control is for the benefit of all residents, and we will not be deterred,” he said.

LASBCA General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, announced plans to remove structures encroaching on high-tension powerline setbacks, citing safety risks.

“These buildings pose significant dangers and violate safety regulations. Enforcement will begin immediately after the ultimatum expires,” he declared.
