The deadline for filing employers’ yearly tax returns has been extended by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service to February 7, 2024.

Companies are required by law to file their yearly tax returns by January 31 of each fiscal year, and failure to do so results in penalties.

However, the LIRS stated in a statement signed by Ayodele Subair, its Executive Chairman, that the extension was issued to give taxpayers more time to guarantee that their annual tax returns were submitted and in light of the recent outage on the e-Tax system.

Section 81(3) of the Personal Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2011 outlines penalties and other statutory sanctions. Subair advised employers to take full advantage of the extension to fulfil their civic responsibilities.

“We acknowledge that unanticipated events might occur, and this extension is meant to account for those situations. We kindly request that all employers in Lagos State who are having trouble filing their yearly tax returns give our customer service centre a call or stop by one of the support desks at our numerous tax stations.

“In order to maintain compliance and prevent any potential penalties, it is important to adhere to the revised deadline.”

The LIRS announced on January 23 that there had been a “temporary downtime” on its e-Tax platform and that their technical staff was attempting to fix the problem.
