Veteran Nigerian artist Daddy Showkey has spoken about how his involvement in gang operations in Ikorodu, Lagos State, nearly resulted in his death by lynching.

He claimed that he and a few other young men had terrorised residents with a gun they had found at a trash dump until the day they were apprehended and nearly lynched.

Speaking in the preview for the next episode of the podcast “The Honest Bunch,” Daddy Showkey revealed how, when they were miraculously saved, he and his group were already tied up and ready to be set on fire.

The seasoned singer asserted that anyone could achieve greatness if they put in the necessary effort, given his ability to rise to legendary stature in spite of a difficult upbringing.

“I was in a gang back in the day,” he declared. I am not going to lie. Where we used to gather items from the trash dump in Ikorodu, several of us discovered a rifle. We began terrorising the neighbourhood with the gun.

When we were out one day acting as usual, someone screamed, “Thefters, thieves, thieves,” as soon as they saw us. We then began to flee, but we were caught. They restrained us. They were going to burn us, but fortunately we were spared.

“I am a living example for all young people, showing them that there is hope for everyone if I can survive to this day and still become Daddy Showkey.”

He revealed that one of his gang members was eventually apprehended and executed by lynching.
