MultiChoice Nigeria has declared that it will appeal the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal’s decision from Friday in Abuja, which fined the company N150 million for contesting the court’s jurisdiction.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), MultiChoice Nigeria was fined N150 million by the tribunal for violating its ruling.

Until the outcome of the lawsuit Festus Onifade, an attorney based in Abuja, filed before it, the injunction had barred the pay-TV company from raising its monthly subscription with effect from May 1.

The pay-TV provider was also mandated by the tribunal to give its Nigerian clients a complimentary one-month subscription to either DStv or GOtv.

However, MultiChoice issued a statement in response to the Tribunal’s instructions stating that it disagreed with the decision and would appeal it.

A portion of the statement said, “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal order regarding its jurisdiction to consider an issue pertaining to pricing control.

Because we don’t agree with the decision, we will appeal the decision.

We are not allowed to say further because the matter is still under appeal.
