Music for me is a Calling: 83 Year Old Veteran Saxophonist Prince Eji Oyewole

Prince Eji Oyewole’s music career spans over 60 years . Having trained, performed and live in Ibadan, London, Germany and France. He has distinguished himself as a unique, disciplined and exceptional musician.

At 83 years of age Prince Eji Oyewole remains one of Nigeria’s greatest Saxophonists having played with big bands like *Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Miles Davies , Adeolu Akisanya and Jimmy Cliff* whom he worked together with in Island Records. He was famous for arranging the horns in Bob Marleys *Buffalo Soldier* and also played the Saxophone interlude of Adeolu Akisanya’s *Rosena* .

 

Oyewole released his *first album in 1977* and titled it *Charity Begins* at home. According to him he said “ many of us dream of a better safer and more caring world without recognizing that it all begins with creating and maintaining a deeper love in our own home. The seeds of world peace should be planted in our own backyard.

The song Charity begins at home according to him was recorded when he came to Nigeria to perform during Festac 77. Another song he recorded within this period was *Unity in Africa* which was directed to African Leaders to embrace peace and harmony rather than conflict and misunderstanding.

 

According to Prince Eji Oyewole he said *music to him is more of a calling and that no matter the frustration that comes with it one must never give up.* He believes that people shouldn’t play music for stupid reasons but rather music should come with passion.

 

When asked what he thinks about todays musicians ? He said they play music according to their knowledge and capacity. He said most of the younger generation love to watch him perform as they are always able to take home one or two things.

 

His band *Afrobars Band* is still very active today and they play Jazz, Highlife,etc

 

Prince Eji Oyewole who is a double Prince is a native of Ibadan in Oyo State
