The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has announced a 5% reward for whistleblowers who provide reliable information that results in the conviction of offenders, in an effort to bolster its campaign against the misuse of the naira.

This was revealed by EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale during his appearance as a guest on the EFCC 97.3FM Abuja talk show yesterday.

The commission’s dedication to upholding the law and shielding the economy from the damaging effects of naira abuse was highlighted by Oyewale.

He clarified that the goal of the 5% reward was to incentivize people who were considering coming forward with information that could help with criminal prosecutions.

If you report someone spraying Naira, you can get a reward. Whistleblowing is that. According to Oyewale, “the whistleblower act offers 5% of the total amount involved to whoever provides credible information that can withstand the rigours of prosecution and is not the result of malice and mischief.”

He continued by saying that since the task force on naira misuse and dollarization was established, the EFCC had already succeeded in obtaining around 50 convictions nationwide.

Rejecting the naira as legal money is illegal, according to the EFCC spokesman, who also threatened to prosecute individuals found guilty.

Noting that the extensive usage of foreign currencies was harmful to the nation’s economic progress and that the commission was working nonstop to nairalise the economy,

“Rejecting the naira is a crime,” stated Oyewale. It is illegal to reject naira that is clean and not mint even if there is nothing wrong with it.

The naira represents our economy. Since we are a sovereign country with our own territorial integrity, all transactions in Nigeria must be made in naira for everything that falls under the purview of our economy.
