There are no plans to cancel the licences of further Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This was said in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday by the acting director of corporate communications of the top bank, Mrs. Hakama Sidi-Ali.
In reaction to reports in certain places that there were intentions to cancel the licences of Unity, Keystone, and Polaris banks after Heritage Bank withdrew its operating licence on Monday, Sidi-Ali made a statement.
Following its regulatory action against Heritage Bank Plc on Monday, the CBN has been prompted to take action against three other banks, according to information that has been making the rounds in the public domain.
The CBN categorically declares that these claims are untrue and are meant to incite panic inside the financial sector.
“The financial system in Nigeria is still robust, secure, and safe.
“In accordance with the Circular revising the minimum capital requirements for the Banking Sector Recapitalization Programme, our banks have started submitting implementation plans for
“Banks that are Commercial, Merchant, and Non-Interest Banks (CMNIBs)”
She stated that the apex bank was presently reviewing the plans.
She claims that by requiring CMNIBs to recapitalize, the CBN is taking a proactive step that will raise the bank’s capital and strengthen its resilience to economic shocks.
According to her, it would allow them to give vital economic sectors the finance they sorely need.
As a result, the financial system will contribute more to the expansion and growth of Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy.
The CBN wishes to reassure all parties involved of its steadfast dedication to maintaining the stability of the financial system.
The director declared, “Our financial system is still on firm ground, and the CBN will keep taking all necessary actions to ensure its safety and soundness.”
Remember that the CBN declared on Monday that Heritage Bank Plc’s licence will be revoked effective immediately?
