Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down from the position with immediate effect.

The return of Obasa who has served as the speaker since 2015 was confirmed during Monday’s plenary session, months after he was impeached by lawmakers in January over allegations of poor leadership, high-handedness, frequent tardiness to plenary sessions, abuse of office, and intimidation of colleagues.

It was also reported that 90 percent of the lawmakers supported his removal which was 32 out of 40 members who supported the motion for his  removal

Following his impeachment, Obasa contested the process, arguing that constitutional procedures were not followed. He also dismissed the corruption allegations, calling them “impossible.”

“My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,” Obasa had stated.

In an effort to resolve the leadership crisis, senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), stepped in at the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

Following a reconciliation meeting on Monday, Meranda announced her resignation along with other key principal officers.

“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she declared during the plenary session.

With her departure, Obasa was reinstated as Speaker. Addressing the House, he expressed gratitude to the lawmakers and called for unity and cooperation moving forward.

It was later revealed that Mojisola Meranda was also reelected to her former office as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Her tenure as Speaker was short-lived as she served for only 50 days in office beginning on January 13, 2025, after Obasa’s impeachment.
