The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has invited human rights activist Omoyele Sowore for questioning following a viral video capturing an alleged extortion incident involving police officers at Lagos Airport.
In a letter dated January 23, 2025, and signed by CP Ibitoye Rufus Alajide on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), Sowore was asked to appear for an interview at the Police Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, January 27, 2025.
The police claim they are investigating allegations including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, reckless acts, and cyberstalking, which they say Sowore’s name prominently features in.
This follows a December 2024 incident where Sowore filmed police officers allegedly operating an illegal checkpoint and extorting money from motorists near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The video sparked public outrage and led to the officers involved being identified and disciplined.
Sahara Reporters, however, claims that the invitation is motivated by personal grievances held by the police chief over Sowore’s public criticisms, including referring to him as “Illegal IG” following the extension of his tenure beyond the retirement age.
