Many artists released a tonne of amazing songs in 2023, and those songs have been streamed a tonne on Spotify, especially by Gen Zs, the most tech-savvy generation alive.

We can all agree that this generation, which spans the ages of 11 and 26, has had a significant impact on popular culture, including music, even though there is much to say about them.

Even though listening habits vary from person to person, an initiative that unites Gen Z artists and songs throughout Sub-Saharan Africa may bring us one step closer to understanding what it is that makes African Gen Zs move and groove, as evidenced by this year’s Spotify Wrapped.

In 2023, Canadian rapper Drake ascends to the top of the charts, partly due to the release of his eagerly awaited album ‘For All the Dogs’ in October and his joint album ‘Her Loss’ with 21 Savage, which came out in late 2022.

Afrobeats remains a highly favoured genre among Generation Z, as evidenced by the steady contributions of Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, Rema, and Omah Lay, who consistently feature on the top ten list.

This year, Burna Boy, Asake, and Davido all released new albums, and Rema and Omah Lay released deluxe editions of their earlier records.

But this year, Gen Z listeners weren’t limited to Afrobeats artists; The Weeknd, Drake’s Canadian counterpart, was also heavily streamed by this generation in 2023, largely due to the release of the deluxe edition of his 2016 album “Starboy.” With the release of his eagerly awaited album “Utopia,” which fans had been waiting for five years, American hip-hop artist Travis Scott also finds himself among the top ten artists that Gen Z streamed in SSA.

The fact that 21 Savage and Future are among the artists that Gen Z listeners in Sub-Saharan Africa stream the most, despite their lack of solo projects released this year, demonstrates the group’s love for global rap music.
