Yesterday, the Senate Committee on Agriculture declared that food insecurity posed a threat to the survival of the country and urged the legislative and executive branches to work together to find a solution.
During an interactive meeting with Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari in the National Assembly in Abuja, Senator Saliu Mustapha (APC, Kwara) chaired the committee.
The minister was called before the joint agriculture committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives to offer some explanations for why there is still hunger in spite of the various federal programs that have been implemented.
“We are determined to end food insecurity in Nigeria,” declared Mustapha. Without food security, Nigerians as a country cannot exist.
Since everyone is a stakeholder in this significant industry, we cannot afford to let our people down. We are dedicated to seeing that the government’s agricultural policies are carried out. We’ll make sure that more food is produced.
According to Hon. Bello Kaoje, the chairman of the House committee, cooperation between the legislative and executive branches will contribute to Nigeria’s food security.
Nonetheless, Kyari stated that the federal government was taking action to increase food production.
He stated that the initiatives comprised a scheduled fertilizer transfer to farmers, the start of dry-season farming, and assistance cooperation with the World Bank.
