The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende has solicited the support of all residents in the state towards eradicating social vices in society, stressing that the government cannot do it alone.

Speaking on an interactive radio programme: “Your Side Mirror”, aired on Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1FM earlier today, Ogunlende said some of the vices that the Ministry has been making frantic efforts to eradicate include drug abuse and street begging which are found virtually in every part of Lagos.

“The task of ridding Lagos State of social vices to build the city of our dream cannot be accomplished by the government alone without the effective participation of the citizenry”, he explained.

He noted that the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, which includes Social Inclusion, Gender Equality and Youth Empowerment, has saddled the Ministry with more responsibilities which requires the redoubling of efforts to meet the expectations and yearnings of Lagosians. He added that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu expects nothing less from the staff of the Ministry in terms of ensuring that they play their role in creating a conducive socio-economic environment for residents to live and do their businesses.

The Honourable Commissioner revealed that the Ministry, in applying the carrot and stick approach, has decided to work with the Liaison Offices of the persons taken off the streets to relocate them back to their respective states.

Maintaining that all hands must be on deck in a bid to sanitise the State, Ogunlende advised citizens to either report cases relating to drug abuse or street begging to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development hotline: 08097226696 or contact the Ministry via its social media platforms.

He urged the youths to desist from drug abuse and take advantage of the abundant opportunities made available by the State Government through the Ministries of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; Wealth Creation and Employment, and Youth and Social Development, where a lot of programmes have been designed to help people acquire skills to earn a living.

The Commissioner averred that the Ministry has widened its network by collaborating with the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency and Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps officers to rid the state of all social vices, particularly in the 58 identified hotspots across the State.
