Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has expressed disappointment over what he perceives as a lack of support from Nigerian musicians for the film industry.
The award-winning actor turned producer whose latest film Reel Love is currently in cinemas, pointed out that while Nollywood actors actively promote Nigerian music, the support is rarely reciprocated by musicians.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts, Timini hinted that he was not yet ready to delve into the issue fully.
“Really wish musicians supported Nollywood the way we support their music, but that’s a conversation for another day,” he wrote.
Despite his concerns, Timini’s debut project as an executive producer, Reel Love, has recorded an impressive performance at the box office. Released on Valentine’s Day, the romantic drama earned ₦40.5 million on its opening day, making it the second-highest Nollywood debut in history.
According to data from the Nigerian box office, Reel Love trails only Funke Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa, which earned ₦46.3 million on its opening day (December 13, 2024).
Initial projections estimated the film’s first-day earnings between ₦14 million and ₦16 million, which were later revised to ₦20 million–₦25 million, and subsequently increased to ₦30 million. However, the final figure of ₦40.5 million far surpassed expectations.
With a strong opening, Reel Love is expected to perform even better over the weekend, driven by high Valentine’s Day attendance.
The film follows the story of Tomide, a social media influencer, and Rachel, an entrepreneur, whose love story unfolds after an awkward first encounter. It was created by Timini Egbuson, directed by Kayode Kasum, and written by Ife Olujuyigbe.
