Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu Lay Foundation for FirstBank’s Iconic 40-Story Headquarters in Eko Atlantic

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, presided over the foundation-laying ceremony for FirstBank Group’s new eco-friendly headquarters at Eko Atlantic City on Wednesday. The 40-story edifice, set to become Nigeria’s tallest building, represents innovation and economic strength, reinforcing Lagos as a major financial hub in Africa.

Shettima, speaking at the event, described the project as a landmark development in Nigeria’s financial sector. “Today we lay the foundation for a monumental structure in Nigeria’s financial landscape, the FirstBank iconic tower, a symbol of our nation’s progress and ambition. This tower will stand as a testament to our economic strength and vitality,” he said. He emphasized FirstBank’s historical role in shaping the economy, supporting businesses, and driving financial innovation for over 130 years.

The new headquarters will be an architectural and environmental marvel, integrating state-of-the-art technology and sustainability principles. Shettima commended FirstBank’s expansion beyond Nigeria, stating, “FirstBank has extended its reach from Lagos to London and all around major financial centers worldwide, proudly flying Nigeria’s flag on the global stage.”

Highlighting the government’s commitment to economic growth, Shettima also praised the Chagoury Group, developers of Eko Atlantic City. “As president, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where significant investment and transformative projects like this can thrive through bold economic reforms, strategic public-private partnerships, and infrastructure development,” he assured.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, officially handed over the project’s approval certificate, enabling immediate construction. “FirstBank, as usual, has led the way. I want to thank the visionaries who created a new city that will be Africa’s model city that all of us will be proud of,” Sanwo-Olu stated, urging regulatory bodies to approve similar projects for other financial institutions.

In his remarks, Olusegun Alebiosu, CEO of FirstBank Group, described the groundbreaking as a historic moment, positioning FirstBank as a future-driven institution. “This new headquarters is not just about a modern architectural masterpiece; it is reimagining banking for generations yet unborn,” he said. The 43-story tower, upon completion, will serve as a center for financial innovation, digital transformation, and operational excellence.

Chairman of FirstHoldCo, Femi Otedola, expressed appreciation for the support from government and industry stakeholders, reaffirming FirstBank’s commitment to technological advancement and customer-focused banking. “To our customers and stakeholders, FirstBank is and will continue to be a legacy to behold,” he stated. He commended the Chagoury Group, likening Eko Atlantic City’s development to a modern engineering wonder.

The ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Aliko Dangote, Gilbert and Roland Chagoury, Dr. Deji Adeleke, Tunde Folawiyo, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Delta State Governor James Ibori, and Central Bank of Nigeria representatives.

With a heritage spanning over 130 years, FirstBank continues to set the pace in innovation and global banking excellence. The new headquarters, a landmark in Nigeria’s financial landscape, is poised to redefine the banking experience while reinforcing FirstBank’s commitment to sustainable growth.
