The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has been entrusted by the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to report instances of illicit building construction occurring inside the State.

During the Building Collapse Prevention Guild’s courtesy visit to the Ministry on Wednesday, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, gave the speech and stated that the BCPG was a significant stakeholder whose joint efforts would significantly reduce the risk of building collapse.

He called on the Guild to intensify its oversight efforts by keeping an eye out for violations at building sites, which should be reported right away to the Ministry so that suitable measures can be taken.

In order to ensure that the built environment is sustainable, it would be greatly appreciated if you could independently monitor building sites and report any violations or illegalities that you come across.

“It is important to emulate the developed world, which thrives on whistle-blowing to secure the environment and keep wrongdoers at bay,” he stated.

He continued by saying that the government was keen to keep its connections with trade associations like the BCPG in order to prevent building collapse.

He explained that the government’s willingness to form an alliance with experts for the benefit of the physical environment was the foundation of the Certified Accreditor Programme (CAP), a recent initiative of the Lagos State Government to expedite building plan approval and improve the staging of building construction works through the involvement of tried and trusted private professionals.

Engineer Oluwole Sotire, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, announced that a review of the training and certification programmes for artisans—who play a critical role in preventing building collapse—will be conducted with the aim of advancing building rights.

Tpl. Sulaimon Yusuf, National President of BCPG, praised the Ministry’s request and advised quick response in the event that any association members submitted a report.

Tpl. Joseph Akande, the Chairman of the BCPG in Lagos State, praised the Certified Accreditor Programme (CAP) idea and said that its implementation will provide stability and confidence to the industry.
